WHAT'S THE SITUATION?
1 kg of leather uses 16,000 liters of water and 70-300 kg of CO². Polyurethane and PVC are made from plastic. Plant- based leathers are mixed with plastic. With consumers and brands caring about sustainability, the vegan leather market is projected at 78 billion in 2025.
HOW THEY CAN HELP
Treekind by Biophilica is a patent- pending vegan leather which reproduces the looks and feels of leather. It is free of plastic and toxins, and completely plant-derived: made with cellulose (the world's most abundant polymer). Treekind is home compostable, recyclable, and uses 0.1% of the water necessary to produce cowhide leather.
USE CASE
Their first customer is ID Genève Watches, which uses Treekind for the strap of their fully sustainably sourced premium watch.
